Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

We use the May's rink at Taft School. 90 Guernseytown Rd Watertown, CT 06795

Park in the lot and walk down the hill to the right of the flag pole if you are looking at the building.

How much does it cost?

Please see our Rates page

How long is each session?

Each session is 8 weeks of classes.  During session 3 of the season the last week is used to have our annual show.

What should I wear?

Taft is a very COLD rink, so be sure to dress in layers to stay warm and comfortable. Here’s what we recommend: gloves or mittens, helmet (not required, but encouraged for beginners),  hat, warm jacket, stretchy pants (like Under Armour, Danskin, Lululemon, Target, etc.).  Staying warm and flexible will help you focus on learning and having fun on the ice!

Do you rent skates?

While we do have a few pairs of used skates that we keep on hand we don't rent out skates. Each skater is required to bring their own pair of skates. NO DOUBLE BLADES.

Where can I get skates?

You can purchase ice skates at any sporting goods store that carries them, but we strongly recommend starting with figure skates. Their design offers a better blade for learning and developing proper technique. Please note that “double-runner” skates (with two blades per skate) are not allowed. While hockey skates are an option, their shorter blade can be challenging for beginners. For the best fit and selection, we recommend visiting Jenskates in Cheshire, CT.  This video provides a helpful tutorial on how to properly lace Jackson, Edea, and Risport figure skates.

What age can my child start skating lessons?

Watertown Skating Club teaches children beginning at age 4.

Do you have classes for adults?

Absolutely! As an adult, you have two options: you can choose to join our dedicated adult lessons at 7:00 PM, where you’ll learn alongside other adults, or you’re welcome to join the mixed-level classes with skaters of all ages.

What will skaters be learning throughout the sessions?

Basic Skills is a fun and goal-oriented program for beginner skaters, ages 4 through adult, focusing on the fundamentals of skating. Skaters receive specialized group instruction, following the Learn to Skate USA curriculum, endorsed by U.S. Figure Skating and USA Hockey.

What happens after completing Learn to Skate USA level, Basic 6?

Stick with us and take your skating to the next level. You’ve built a strong foundation, and now it’s time to explore different disciplines to discover where you shine. We’ll guide you through your first three ice dances and the first two Moves in the Field tests. You’ll also get an exciting introduction to jumps, spins, and all the other impressive elements you’ve seen on TV.

My child wants to play hockey. Is this program still a good fit?

Yes, absolutely! Learn to Skate is designed to teach the fundamentals of skating, no matter your end goal—whether it's hockey or figure skating. The first six levels are the same for everyone. In fact, many top hockey players began by learning figure skating techniques to build strong foundational skills.
